A Documentary By
Isabel Beckett

Haven been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 6, i soon realised it was a condition that is widely misunderstood. There are so many stereotypes out there about what it means to have the condition, and the sort of person who get its. The majority of these are untrue due to lack of awareness around the condition.
Whilst being in lockdown due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, I decided to do a film about some of my experiences from having the auto-immune disease., told not just by me, but by my family also. I chose to interview my family because, like many health problems, it doesn't just affect the person diagnosed with them, but those around them as well. Gaining an insight from three generations of Beckett, i explore the little known impacts of this well known disease.
Type 1 Diabetes
Type 1 Diabetes is an Auto-immune disease which doesn't have a known cause. It affects 422 million people worldwide, with 400,000 of those living in the UK. How the condition develops is by something causing a trigger in the immune system, causing it to attack itself, specifically the Beta Cells. It is these cells which develop the hormone Insulin, which converts our glucose into energy. Without it you will die, so, diabetics must inject themselves with Insulin every time they consume something containing glucose. There is a 680 in 100,000 chance of dying from this condition and there is currently no cure.
